Gambia Plastic Recycling
Profile
My name is Babucarr E. Camara, a 27-year-old waste management practitioner from The Gambia, the 'smiling coast of Africa'.
Throughout my life, I have watched many hopeful Gambian nationals search for success in other countries. However,
I wish to set up a sustainable business that helps not only my family but my country, its citizens, the climate and future generations.
While working in the field of recycling, I have been involved in coordinating, training and providing best consultation services to organisations and start-ups in The Gambia, Senegal and Mauritania. After four years in this industry, I became inspired to set up BMJs recycling as an independent project, open to collaboration to combat plastic pollution.
Plastic pollution has become one of the leading global emerging environmental concerns of recent years.
In Africa, plastic ends up in landfills, littered on the streets, or burned in the open air, which is toxic to humans causing major health problems. In The Gambia, the plastic waste crisis is precisely that… A crisis, that needs to be resolved immediately.
The Gambia is known as “the smiling coast of Africa”, which attracts tourists from all over the world. Yet, the first thing people observe and comment on is the sea of plastic waste, littering the streets and communities.
BMJs Recycling aims to provide waste collection points throughout the Gambia to combat our nationwide struggle with waste pollution in a sustainable manner, not only to remove waste from the streets, tbut to produce valuable up-cycled products to be sold, which will inject money into the local economy.
Our Plan
This project will focus on setting up regional plastic collection points in the largest town of each region of The Gambia, starting from the West Coast region and Greater Banjul area with the aim of extending it to the rest of the country as the business grows.
Individuals will be able drop off their soft plastic (LDPE) and hard plastics (HDPE), which will be used to produce high-quality and unique paving tiles, roofing tiles, benches, chairs, bricks, tables, pillars, flowerbeds and other household items.
These will be designed to target both National and International markets.
